Tritium Watches: Automatic, Dive & GMT

A tritium watch uses small sealed gas light sources on the dial, hands or other markers to make the time readable in darkness. Tritium describes the illumination, not the movement: a watch can use tritium with either an automatic or a quartz movement.

The tritium illumination needs neither a battery nor sunlight. It continues glowing independently of the movement. An automatic watch still needs stored energy from winding to keep time, while a quartz watch needs its own power source to run the movement.

Tritium light sources can remain visible for many years, but gradually become dimmer. Tritium has a half-life of about 12.3 years, meaning its activity falls by half over that period. Useful readability depends on the original light output, tube design, viewing conditions and the wearer; there is no fixed date when every watch suddenly stops glowing.

Tritium does not need to recharge between evenings and does not fade over a single night in the way light-charged lume does. It does gradually dim over the years. Your eyes’ adjustment to darkness and the surrounding light can also change how bright the watch appears.

T25 and T100 describe categories of total tritium activity in the watch, not the number of tubes. T25 covers up to 25 millicuries, while T100 covers more than 25 and up to 100 millicuries. The label alone does not guarantee a fixed brightness difference: tube size, colour, layout and age also affect what you see.

They suit different preferences. Super-LumiNova can be very bright just after light exposure and then fades. Tritium provides a continuous glow without charging, which is useful when checking the time long after lights-out. Some watches combine both, so compare the illumination used on the hands, dial and bezel.

Intact tritium light sources are designed for normal watch wear, with the gas sealed inside glass tubes. Tritium emits low-energy beta radiation. Tritium illumination does not determine water resistance. Check the model’s rating and instructions: the Atlas Tritium and Sea Recon GMT specifications list 30 ATM water resistance. Secure the crown before entering water, do not operate it underwater, and have seals checked before diving, particularly after servicing or an impact.

Compare diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness and weight rather than diameter alone. The Atlas Tritium has a 38mm case and 46mm lug-to-lug length; the Sea Recon GMT has a 42mm case and 49mm lug-to-lug length. Strap fit also affects comfort.

Wipe the watch with a soft cloth and protect it from hard impacts, harsh chemicals and extreme heat. For a watch rated for water use with sound seals, secure the crown and rinse with fresh water after saltwater exposure, then dry it. Follow the movement’s winding instructions and arrange servicing when needed.

Tritium tubes cannot be recharged with sunlight or electricity. Replacement may be possible through an appropriately equipped service provider, depending on the model, parts availability and applicable handling requirements.
